Acts of Inspiration & Family

The NHSSCA Family has never been doubted. Members show their leadership, camaraderie, and commitment to both the profession and one another regularly.

The spirit of the association was on display in 2021 with the #GriffinChallenge and the support provided to the member Scott Pherson — and that spirit has never been brighter. Scott was coaching at North Central High School in Indiana when he and his wife, Lauren, were expecting their second child. A month before the due date, Lauren experienced bleeding and was rushed to the hospital. Their son, Griffin, had a faint heartbeat upon arrival. Griffin Scott Pherson lived from 12:15 to 2:20 a.m. on March 19, 2017.

“He fought for 2 hours and 5 minutes to meet us,” Scott said in a 2018 newspaper article. “The first thing I attempted to do when we left the hospital a couple of days later, I just went to the gym, and I tried my hardest to fight like he fought and give it everything I had. I wanted to make him proud of me, and I’ve pretty much put my head down and worked ever since.

Later that year, Scott left North Central HS to become the head strength coach at Columbus East High School. Scott eventually told his students about Griffin, and Scott had the idea of doing a 2-hour, 5-minute workout to honor Griffin’s life. One of his student-athletes, Kendal Williams, decided to put together the workout honoring Griffin for her senior project.

In 2021, the members of the NHSSCA took the workout to a whole different level with the #GriffinChallenge. Strength Coaches around the country have told Scott’s story and their desire to honor Griffin by having their athletes workout for the 2 hours and 5 minutes, and the athletes have embraced this mission. There were countless videos, photos, tweets and Facebook posts. Every day there was a new post, a new story about a team that has conquered the challenge and honored the life of Griffin in their way, and in doing so carrying on Griffin’s legacy and spirit.

The way that the NHSSCA embraced the #GriffinChallenge, and honored Griffin Scott Pherson is inspiring. Even in challenging times such as this one, the actions of the members have reminded all of us about one thing that is so important: Even when times are most challenging, we find ways to come together and keep moving forward.
